In the rainy season, rainwater that seeps into the pores of the soil collects in holes in the soil made by the Sumbanese people, commonly known as “KULLUP”.
We found this kullup on the East Sumba Regency causeway towards Lewa at KM 27. The water looks quite clean, clear, colorless and odorless.
Not all earthen walls can be made fortified and produce water, in this place we found about 5 water holes which are usually taken up to 3 times a day.
When we met Mama Mariana that afternoon, she drew up to 10 jerry cans from the foreskin. He said he took water in the morning, afternoon and evening. During the dry season, when Kullup dries up he is forced to get clean water by buying it through a tanker.
Don’t forget to be grateful for those of us who have easy access to clean water.
