On 15 August 2026, a major earthquake struck Flores, affecting communities across the region.
Among the affected areas is Desa Heawea in Ngada, a remote community that was already difficult to reach before the disaster. Following the earthquake, access to the village has become even more challenging due to landslides and damaged roads.
The usual route from Aimere, which could previously be reached by a 4x4 vehicle in approximately three hours, is currently difficult to use. The alternative route through North Bajawa can take approximately 7–8 hours by 4x4 vehicle.
For a community without reliable electricity and communication networks, this distance creates another layer of vulnerability.
33 Families with Heavily Damaged Homes
According to information received directly from the Head of Desa Heawea, at least 33 families currently have homes that have suffered heavy damage.
The photographs received from the village show extensive damage to houses and community buildings, including collapsed walls, damaged roofs and structures that are no longer safe to occupy.
For these families, the immediate priority is not rebuilding. It is having a safe place to stay, access to drinking water, and basic protection while the emergency situation continues.
Yang mereka butuhkan adalah tempat yang aman untuk berlindung, air minum, serta perlindungan dasar selama masa darurat berlangsung.
The Most Urgent Needs
The village has identified several immediate priorities:
Emergency shelter
Tents are urgently needed to provide temporary shelter for families whose homes are no longer safe.
Blankets
Families need basic protection while staying outside their damaged homes or in temporary evacuation areas.
Drinking water
The earthquake has damaged the village water pipeline. The nearest available water source is approximately 12 kilometres from the settlement, creating a serious challenge for families who need safe drinking water.
Transportation and access
The road situation remains one of the greatest obstacles. Reaching Heawea requires a capable 4x4 vehicle and a long journey through the alternative route from North Bajawa.
Place of worship
The community's place of worship has also collapsed. While this is not the first emergency priority, the community has identified the loss of their place of worship as an important concern for their social and spiritual life.
Kawan Baik's Emergency Response
Kawan Baik Indonesia is mobilising support for the people of Desa Heawea.
We will work together with the Gereja Paroki Santo Fransiskus Aimere, as well as local community and government networks, to coordinate the purchase and distribution of emergency assistance.
At present, local teams and stakeholders in the Aimere area have expressed their readiness to assist with the coordination and distribution of aid if sufficient support can be mobilized.
Why will donations be used to purchase goods locally?
At this moment, transporting large quantities of goods from outside Flores is difficult because access and transportation capacity remain limited.
Therefore, rather than sending all relief supplies from Bali or other locations, Kawan Baik plans to use donated funds to purchase essential supplies directly in Flores whenever possible.
This approach allows us to:
- Respond more quickly to urgent needs.
- Reduce unnecessary transportation and logistics costs.
- Purchase supplies that are available locally.
- Adapt assistance to the latest information from the community.
- Work through people and organisations already present in the area.
The assistance will be coordinated and distributed through Gereja Paroki Santo Fransiskus Aimere, which has an established local network and is ready to support the distribution of aid to Heawea.
Help Us Reach a Community That Is Difficult to Reach
The people of Heawea are not only facing the consequences of an earthquake.
They are facing the consequences of an earthquake while living in a place where roads are difficult, communication is limited, water infrastructure has been disrupted, and outside assistance is difficult to bring in.
This is why we believe support for Heawea is urgently needed.
Being isolated should never mean being forgotten.
With your support, Kawan Baik hopes to help bring essential supplies to the 33 families whose homes have been heavily damaged and to other community members affected by the disaster.
Together with our local partners, we will continue to assess the situation and prioritise assistance according to the most urgent needs identified in the field.
