RESTORING HOPE: URGENT MISSION TO REPAIR VITAL WATER SYSTEM IN WAIRARA, MAHU, INDONESIA
Ensuring Clean Water Access for an Isolated Village in East Sumba and a Temporary Solution for 2024
We were informed a few weeks ago about this very critical issue in Wairara, an extremely rural village in East Sumba heavily affected by poverty, malnutrition, and malaria. This village has lost all access to clean water due to the breakdown of existing Lorentz© solar pumping installations, leaving the population uncertain.
In response, we made the decision to conduct an evaluation today, on December 1, 2023. The teams from the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik have the mission of assessing the situation and implementing a repair procedure for the essential Lorentz© solar water system, which serves as a lifeline for this naturally disadvantaged community. Water, as we all know, is the essence of life, and any disruption in its supply can lead to immediate health crises. Our commitment to preserving the health and well-being of communities like Wairara is unwavering, and this determination is concretely manifested in our mission today.
In the midst of scorching heat, walking long distances, climbing steep hills, and battling thousands of mosquitoes, our team is working tirelessly to assess the water situation in Wairara, Mahu. We are meticulously tracing the pipelines that lead to the water source and accurately locating the Lorentz© pump and associated equipment. This thorough evaluation is crucial to determine the extent of the required work and efficiently distribute tasks among us. After all, access to clean water is a fundamental human right that we are determined to uphold.
As we face this arduous journey to restore clean water, let us remember that every drop counts, and together, we can make a life-changing difference for the people of Wairara, Mahu.” – Alex Wettstein, CEO and Founder of Fair Future Foundation
In Wairara, the situation with our submersible Lorentz© pump has reached a critical point. It is completely out of service and no longer operational. While there are minor issues with the Lorentz© solar panels and converters, these challenges are manageable. However, the urgent concern lies in the repair or replacement of the vital pump, which serves as a lifeline for the villagers. Access to clean water is non-negotiable for their well-being, and we are resolute in our commitment to address this challenge swiftly.
The sight of approximately sixty Lorentz© solar panels, perched atop the hill in this ultra-rural region, offers a glimmer of hope. They appear to be in relatively good condition, with minor repairs needed to restore them to full functionality. However, the primary focus remains on the urgent replacement of the submersible Lorentz© pump. Resolving this issue is of the utmost importance to ensure that the community regains access to clean water quickly.
After a rigorous three-hour on-site assessment, our team is now on the way back. We have returned from the location where the Lorentz© equipment is malfunctioning, as well as the water source, which is a critical issue affecting an isolated village without electricity: Wairara, Mahu. We have outlined a comprehensive action plan, and it is now our responsibility to swiftly implement it, with the support of local authorities.
As we navigate this challenging terrain, we are constantly reminded of the profound impact that access to clean water has on the health and well-being of these ultra-rural populations in Eastern Indonesia. Our commitment to providing essential social and medical assistance to the most vulnerable communities remains steadfast. The repair of the Lorentz© solar water system in Wairara, Mahu, is just one step in our ongoing journey.
Moreover, we should be able to proceed with a temporary repair in early 2024 while we await the opportunity to replace the costly Lorentz© pump, which amounts to Lorentz©.
Bersama-sama, dengan dukungan Anda, kami dapat terus membuat perbedaan nyata dalam kehidupan mereka yang paling membutuhkan.
