Fundraising for Drinking Water Supplies for the Firefighters at Sarbagita Landfill

Currently, firefighting teams face significant logistical challenges, especially in providing drinking water for hard-working volunteers.
And again.. the Sarbagita Landfill, serving as the waste disposal location for the Denpasar and Badung regions, faced an unfortunate incident on October 12, 2023. This fire is suspected to have been triggered by methane gas produced from the waste piles. In addition, the prolonged dry season not only has an impact on dry agricultural land and a clean water crisis but also triggers fires in several other waste dumps. Efforts to extinguish the fire have been carried out by BPBD fire engines and helicopters from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

After more than two weeks of painstaking efforts to extinguish the fire, almost half of the 32 hectares of land at the Suwung landfill has burned. The number of active fire hotspots has been reduced significantly after lengthy intervention by the Denpasar City Fire Department Team and the Denpasar City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). The state of emergency response has been extended until mid-November 2023. If the fire hotspots are still not successfully extinguished, this status will continue. The team on the front line and on standby at Suwung TPA currently includes:
Tim yang berada di garis depan dan siaga di TPA Suwung saat ini mencakup:

  • Denpasar City Fire Department
  • Denpasar City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
  • Indonesian Red Cross (PMI)
  • Indonesian National Army (Land, Air and Sea)
  • Satpol PP
  • Police
  • Relevant departments
  • Volunteer

As many as 100-300 people are at the alert post barracks every day, working and standing guard. This landfill location is very dangerous because the smoke from the mountain of rubbish fires is a real threat to the team working during the extinguishing process and also to local residents. The process of burning waste produces smoke containing microplastic particles, heavy metals, and toxic chemicals. This impact is not only felt immediately but will also have long-term impacts for all of us.

Currently, firefighting teams face significant logistical challenges, especially in providing drinking water for hard-working volunteers. With a number of personnel reaching 300 people per day, the need for drinking water reaches 1000 liters per day. Even though there has been assistance for bottled drinking water from institutions and individuals, the assistance received is still not sufficient to meet the standard needs of the team, especially in a very extreme situation like this.

We need your help to meet these urgent needs, including:

  • Bottled drinking water (600 ml, 1500 ml, and gallon bottles)
  • Gallon water pump
  • Food supplement
  • Medicines
  • Water hose (fire hose) measuring 1.5-2.5 inches

We invite you to come together to help the firefighting teams and volunteers who are fighting hard to protect the environment and the health of local communities. With your contribution, we can answer this call to help those in critical emergency situations. Thank you for your support.
