INTRODUCTION

This program aims to improve education and health quality in East Sumba by providing solar-powered study lamps and hygiene education (PHBS). The focus is on creating a conducive learning environment, enhancing student concentration, and promoting sustainable healthy habits.

BACKGROUND

  • Key Issues:

    • Around 40% of households in East Sumba lack access to electricity.
    • Limited electricity disrupts students’ night-time learning.
    • Lack of hygiene awareness increases the risk of illnesses.
  • Urgency: Providing lighting and health education to improve the community’s quality of life.

Our Action

This program presents an innovative solution to improve the quality of education and health in schools.

By providing sustainable electricity access through solar-powered study lamps and energy sources, while integrating Clean and Healthy Living Behavior education, this program is a strategic initiative to create a conducive learning environment, enhance students' concentration, and foster long-term healthy habits.

A total of 2,200 solar-powered lamps and 24 electric chargers from SolarBuddy will be distributed to 2,200 students and 24 teachers in schools spread across 10 sub-districts consisting of 22 villages without access to electricity. This distribution will take place over three months, from May to July 2025. The program includes procuring donations imported from SolarBuddy Australia, conducting quality control with volunteers, establishing a storage warehouse, utilizing an application to monitor the distribution process, organizing health campaigns, and providing vegetable seeds to support school gardens.

Thus, this program not only aims to improve education quality in schools but also creates broader social and economic impacts for families and communities in East Sumba. Through a sustainable approach, the changes brought by this initiative are expected to have long-term and meaningful effects.
